About — Fabian Joosten
About

Behind the score.

Fabian Joosten was born into a family of musicians and was immersed in music from an early age. He began teaching himself guitar at 15; autodidactic learning became a central aspect of his musical development, an approach he later carried into composing and orchestration.

Growing up listening to metal, rock, hip hop, and jazz gave him insight into a range of musical idioms that continue to inform his orchestral work. He discovered his interest in orchestral music in his early twenties, and it has remained a constant focus since.

His work has been performed by orchestras including the Jena Philharmonics, German Pops Orchestra, Staatskapelle Halle, Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, Bavarian Philharmonics, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, and Sorbian National Ensemble.

In early 2018, he arranged Die Beste Nacht – Kontra K, a collaboration between Das Ding and Baden-Baden Events combining orchestra and rap music. In summer 2018, his composition Kheer Tal - a suite for Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tuvan throat singing, and orchestra, dedicated to Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig - was premiered by the Philharmonie Baden-Baden.

In early 2019, he was commissioned to compose the music for Sagennacht 2019, an annual production by Sorbische National-Ensemble GmbH, comprising 60 minutes of music for small orchestra and choir. In June of the same year, his composition Cherry Blossom Dance premiered in Baden-Baden with the Philharmonie Baden-Baden, and he arranged works by Brahms for the Pianistenclub München's concert featuring Francisco Araiza. Later that year, The White Messengers received its US premiere in New York, performed by the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes under conductor Toshiyuki Shimada.

In early 2021, East West Symphony Hiwar, featuring Masaa and the Jena Philharmonics, was released. The recording was nominated for the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in the categories “Crossover” and “World Music,” and received an Opus Klassik nomination.

In 2022, two major orchestral works were premiered: Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, a four-part piece for solo violin and orchestra, and Der Hirschsprung, a symphonic poem depicting the legend of the Deer Jump in the Black Forest. The same year saw the premieres of two works for piano quartet, Is It 5? and From A Place Of Gloom. His arrangements for the Händelfestspiele and Filmmusiktage Sachsen-Anhalt were performed by the Staatskapelle Halle.

In 2023, Overture To Nothing was premiered in collaboration with the Philharmonie Baden-Baden. His symphonic work Emerged From Nothingness, exploring the aftermath of World War II, received its world premiere with the same orchestra during a concert marking French-German friendship, held in France.

In early 2024, The Ignition was premiered by the Landesjugendorchester Sachsen under conductor Judith Kubitz in concerts held in Leipzig and Pirna.
